Understanding it

What grief really looks like

Grief is often described as five neat stages — denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance. In real life it rarely behaves. Some people skip stages entirely, others loop back through the same one for months.

It can follow a death, the end of a relationship, a diagnosis, a miscarriage, a job or a move. Whatever set it off, grief is not a queue you join and leave on schedule — it’s a personal process, and nothing about yours is wrong.

How can therapy help with grief?

Grief is hard to speak about, and harder to ask for help with. Therapy gives the feelings somewhere to go — and gives you company while they pass through.

Questions, gently answered

Questions people ask us

Is grief a healing process?
Yes. Disbelief, shock, sorrow and guilt are exhausting, but they are also part of how the mind absorbs a loss. Allowing those feelings — rather than outrunning them — is what lets life gradually move forward again.
By naming the pain instead of minimising it, expecting unpredictable emotions, letting the process take its own shape, and leaning on people who care. Professional support helps when grief starts to feel stuck.
Grief raises stress hormones, which can show up as headaches, back and joint pain, muscle stiffness, disrupted sleep and fatigue. Physical symptoms are a normal part of bereavement, not a sign of weakness.
There is no timetable. Many people notice small shifts within six to eight weeks, while the fuller process can span months or years. Progress usually appears in ordinary things — getting up more easily, eating again, laughing without guilt.
For most people it’s the deep sadness that follows the initial shock. It’s also the stage that, once truly felt, tends to open the way towards acceptance.
Completely. Every TherapyMantra counsellor is licensed and works to UK professional standards, and your therapy room is private and encrypted.
